Home/Away: Away

Starting Pitcher: Blackburn

Final Score: L 5-0

Record: 40-32

Recap: I think that was probably the most humiliating series this season. We just got swept by the Brewers. I repeat, the Brewers. Gallardo totally owned us today, and while I can accept that sometimes we are going to be dominated by a good pitching performance, I'm frustrated that we didn't win at least 1 of the first 2 games. Not to mention Blackburn presented the Twins with another performance less appetizing than something my cat puked up. His position in the rotation is looking very shaky right now. While it was slightly less atrocious than his last outing, you can hardly consider 3.2 innings and 5 earned runs as anything even approaching respectable. Yikes.

There's not much to report offensively. Gallardo had a perfect game going into the 6th inning, when Drew Butera of all people singled for the first Twins hit. We had 5 pathetic hits with just 1 extra-base hit (a double by Morneau) and no walks. We did strike out 12 times though. It was pretty pathetic. Only twice did we even have a runner as far as 2nd base. Epic fail. The only real bright spots in the game were Morneau, who had 2 hits, and Duensing's 3.1 scoreless innings.

Blackburn, in complete opposition, was battered around like a punching bag in his 3.2 innings. He gave up 6 hits (2 doubles and 2 home runs among them) and 3 walks. His ERA is up to 6.10, and Duensing is looking better and better to me. This road trip isn't exactly getting any easier as we take on the Mets. We still have over half the season left, but we're not playing like a playoff contenter right now.

The other big news of the day was our roster move. Brendan Harris was demoted to Rochester today while Jason Repko is on his way up. You can't get outhit by Drew Butera and expect to stay with the club long. It's actually a little bit of a relief given how painful it's been to watch him at the plate. Hopefully he can figure things out down there with the pressure off a little bit. The fact that we're bringing up Repko is something I find very concerning. He's an outfielder. We already have 4 outfielders. The only logical conclusion is that Cuddyer is going to be playing more 3rd base. To which I say, "Hell no!" I'm not a big fan of him at 3rd. I guess we'll see what happens.

Best Moment: Drew Butera breaking up the perfect game.

Most Questionable Moment: Me bothering to watch this game.

Worst Moment: Blackburn getting hammered again.

Quotations of the Day:

  • "I didn't like our energy today. We got down early and didn't show much of a fight. Obviously you give some credit to their pitcher, but at the same time, the energy in our dugout wasn't very good." - Justin Morneau
  • "Everything feels fine. I'm just not getting guys out." - Nick Blackburn
  • "Every team goes though struggles during the year. The good teams come out of it quicker than the bad teams. We need to prove that we're a good team by going into New York and having a good series." - Justin Morneau

Suck-Ass Performance of the Game: Nick Blackburn (3.2 innings pitched, 6 hits, 3 walks, 2 home runs, 5 earned runs, 1 loss). I'll just give the offense the benefit of the doubt right now and chalk up the collective suck to Gallardo being really, really good.

Good commentary...and your titles are always genius!
For all of the recent pitching woes (Blackburn, Slowey, and to a certain extent Baker and Liriano), I am going to blame Pavano's mustache. The Pavstache may have mystical powers for Carl, but it is bad karma for the others. From now on they must avoid looking directly at the 'stache (it's like looking at the sun).

Thanks. And I think you're right about the 'stache. I think all of our pitchers should grow them. Perhaps it will help them break out of their slump. Beards don't count though; mustaches only.
